Mission

Our wellness program’s motto is: “Healthier Tomorrow Than We Are Today”, which embodies our philosophy to educate our associates and family members on preventive care, diet, exercise, smoking cessation and a variety of other wellness topics. By investing in wellness and preventive care, our goal is to positively impact absenteeism, medical claims, camaraderie and the overall working environment of American Licorice Company.

Story

WellCall is our third-party Wellness provider. They provide health coaching services free of charge to our associates for themselves and/or family members. WellCall offers a multitude of health tip sheets, a monthly theme with flyers and many wellness programs—WellWeight, WellCook, WellWalk, etc. With the WellQuit program, American Licorice and WellCall provide a 60 day supply of Nicotine Replacement Therapy drugs to those who are working with a health coach to quit smoking. They also sponsor Got Fitness? in the spring and Maintain, Don’t Gain in the fall. See supplemental data.

Annual Health Fair
We sponsor an annual Health Fair that features many vendors—medical, dental, vision carrier, EAP plan, massage therapists, alternative care providers (acupuncture, chiro), local hospital, local gym, WellCall, etc. See supplemental data.

Let’s Walk to Orlando and Let’s Walk to Las Vegas
Our Walking Programs are a 9-week program designed by our 3rd party Wellness provider, WellCall to help increase physical activity, set fitness goals and support associates in their efforts to improve their overall health. See supplemental data.

Health Screenings
In 2009, we moved our Wellness Program from an activities-based program to a results-based program for our non-union associates. The Health Screenings include three Health Standards that translate to a healthcare premium reduction for those associates who meet the Standard or who agree to participate in an Alternative Qualification. The three Health Standards are Tobacco Use, Blood Pressure and Waist-to-Hip Ratio. These three standards were chosen based on two years of company-wide Wellness data and ALC’s highest Wellness risks. ALC provides Health Screenings at no charge to all associates—they include: bone density testing, glucose test, cholesterol test, waist-to-hip ratio and blood pressure. WellCall also provides on-site health coaches. Health Screening and alternative qualification results are included in the supplemental data.

Personal Health Profile
All associates are able to complete a free Personal Health Profile (HRA) through WellCall. Most associates complete theirs annually after going through free, on-site Health Screenings conducted by WellCall.

30-4-20 Program
The 30-4-20 program encourages associates to exercise for 30 minutes at least 20 days in each month. Each associate who does this earns $10 ALC dollars and is entered into a raffle for $50 gift cards.

Lean and Green Team
This is our company-wide Wellness and Sustainability Committee. The Lean & Green Team makes decisions on Wellness Programs and Initiatives and then helps to implement the programs. They also assess the success of any program or changes that need to be made. Monthly agendas as well as minutes are kept for each meeting. Minutes are provided in supplemental data.

Monthly Wellness Calendar and Tips
The Lean and Green Team calendar highlights wellness events at each location along with updates to our programs. The calendar is updated with monthly Wellness, Safety and Green events. This is posted for all associates to read, copies put in lunchrooms and sent via email out to our staff. It’s also put up on our communication stations. A copy is provided in supplemental data.

Fruit/Veggies/Super Foods Day
Once a month we serve a fruit, vegetable or super food to our associates. Offerings range from the obscure to more everyday foods. We publish a tip sheet on the item that we are serving for the day so that associates can learn about the fruit, veggie or super food. We are trying to encourage our associates to get in their daily intake of fruits and veggies, expose them to something they wouldn’t normally try and educate on why fruits, veggies and super foods are so good for you! The Lean and Green Team Committee members choose what will be served for the month and help purchase and prep the items. A sample tip sheet is provided in supplemental data.

Education
We’ve done a variety of seminars and presentations and try and focus associates on using the WellCall coaching services for a customized wellness plan.

ALC Store
Associates now earn ALC Dollars for all Wellness-related events—the Walking Program, working with a WellCall Coach, etc. The dollars can be used to purchase a variety of items from an on-line store. The ALC store features ALC logo gear and Wellness-related items. We also try to offer “green” options in the store. The Lean and Green Team makes decisions on all items sold in the store. Annual Associate Benefits and Wellness Survey
Associates receive an annual confidential Benefits and Wellness Survey which is tabulated by our Benefits Broker. Sample is attached in supplemental data.
