2021 Healthiest Employers of Western Pennsylvania (Pittsburgh)

2021 Finalists

October 11, 2021

Each year, the Healthiest Employers® awards program honors the best and brightest in workplace wellness. Over the past year and a half, it has become apparent that when it comes to employees’ overall well-being, employers have an incredible opportunity to offer benefits that fit an employee’s unique needs – regardless of where they are in their health journey.

The Healthiest Employers assessment is scored Rubric style on a 1-100 scale. The assessment is made up of six categories with yes/no, multiple choice, and short answer questions, with each question totaling .25-3 points. A Healthiest Employers Index (HEI) is assigned to each applicant to help rank among companies of similar size.

The 6 categories evaluated:

  • Culture and Leadership Commitment
  • Foundational Components
  • Strategic Planning
  • Communications and Marketing
  • Programming and Interventions
  • Reporting and Analytics

The following organizations were named to the Healthiest Employers of Western Pennsylvania for the 2021 nomination period. Congratulations to our finalists!

Small (2-299 Employees)

1st Westmoreland Casemanagement and Supports, Inc. – Greensburg

Westmoreland Casemanagement and Supports, Inc. is located in Greensburg, PA and is part of the mental health and substance abuse services industry. Nearly 60% of both employees and their spouses are actively engaged in the program. New employees are required to attend and complete wellness meetings and education sessions to provide them with the resources to take care of themselves. Additionally, WCSI encouraged employees to receive flu shots and COVID-19 vaccines as they transitioned back into the office and provided the appropriate resources to ensure each associate felt safe and educated on the subject.

“Due to in person events not being possible, WCSI adjusted to the “new normal” and held a Virtual Blood Drive and Virtual Lunch and Learns. Topics such as Living with the Loss of Normal, Healthy Eating on a Budget, and Aspects of Overall Wellness empowered employees to remain vigilant regarding their health, their families’, and their clients’ health. WCSI provided one hour of paid time each day for employees to attend to their personal wellness.” – Lynette Emerick, CEO

2nd SparkPeople Management – Oakmont

Midsize (300-2,999 Employees)

1st Covestro – Pittsburgh

Covestro is among the leading suppliers of premium polymers. Both employees and their spouses are treated on an engagement-based level and have the opportunity to work closely with a health coach to provide the necessary resources to reach their full potential. Employees receive regular communication and are provided virtual events, live meditations, and have access to mental health professionals and resources.

“The most impactful element of the myTotal Wellbeing program is that we continue to meet employees where they are in order to ensure that they have the resources to best take care of themselves. Whether it is by phone, online, or through an app, our goal is to allow them to embrace the program elements that are most important to them, and provide them with the tools they are most comfortable with. Our program is personal, and that’s why it works. The pandemic created a situation across the globe in which many put their own health aside; that was not the case at Covestro. I could not be more proud of how our employees thrived during this critical time.” – Katherine McEvilly, Head of Human Resources

2nd Northwest Bank – Warren

3rd VEKA Inc. – Fombell

Large (3,000+ Employees)

1st Excela Health – Greensburg

Excela Health is a healthcare system consisting of three hospitals, two outpatient surgery centers, multiple physician practices and outpatient facilities, home care and hospice, and durable medical equipment services. Even in 2020, they have maintained an average 90% completion rate for their wellness program. Since the healthcare industry has been so greatly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, Excela acted quickly to implement mental health, stress resiliency, and in-home clinical assistance for employees who have experienced a traumatic situation. On top of all the challenges, they have also seen a reduction in blood pressure, cholesterol, and obesity through biometric screening data.

“Our mission is ‘To Improve the Health and Wellbeing of Every Life We Touch’, which begins with our employees. Our program is part of our culture and supports our employees and their spouses in helping them achieve their wellness goals. It is fun to see our employees and their spouses compete each year to improve their biometric screening scores. We have seen transformations which gives our wellness team great satisfaction in the work we do and empowers us to continue to grow our program and support our workforce.” – Laurie English, Chief Human Resources Officer

2nd University of Pittsburgh Medical Center – Pittsburgh

3rd CGI Technologies and Solutions – Fairfax, Virginia (Local Office: Pittsburgh)
