Q: What is the most unique benefit offering currently in place? If you were to talk about your program with someone who does not work there, what would you share about your program that would make them want to join your team?
A: Our wellness program has gained visibility and been featured locally in the news media and in articles throughout Miami and Broward Counties. Our ability to reach ALL employees and keep them highly engaged is currently trending to exceed 80% participation. Interest and engagement are due in large part to some unique program options we have available live and virtually, including but not limited to: 'self-care' programs that focus on the 'total person" approach to wellness. We recognize that there are multiple facets to employees' lives that require balance. We offer a robust mental health program, a healthy rewards program that focuses on healthy eating, art/music and drama therapy workshops that allow employees to disconnect and recharge during the day, and also life coaching offering 1-1 coaching as well as group workshops. Our cultural competency and sensitivity programs recognize how culture, religion, and demographics influence healthcare decisions and ultimately, health outcomes. Our foundation is grounded in programs that address "real" concerns for "real" people. And in the face of a global pandemic, we recognized the need to increase our offerings in disease management education and have a regular panel of physicians from local healthcare systems who appear 2-4 times monthly, offering priceless information via interactive webinars. BankUnited also provides annual on site mobile mammograms, eye exams and biometric health screenings – all conveniently located at our Corporate Headquarters in Miami Lakes, Florida.
Q: How are you addressing the mental health crisis in the United States as COVID-19 continues to pose a threat?
A: BankUnited has taken a very proactive approach to addressing the mental health needs of its employees and their families. Through our wellness program, we have partnered with Cleveland Clinic, Baptist Health, Jackson Health Systems and Memorial Health Systems as well as private practice psychologists and licensed mental health counselors. Ongoing interactive educational webinars, one on one coaching consults, and special workshops to address the concerns that arose as a result of the global pandemic as well as the transition back to a hybrid work environment. Additionally, we implemented more focused and targeted therapies (art, music, drama, and pet therapy) to assist employees in coping with some of the stressors associated with the pandemic. We also work closely with our EAP program and HR department to promote our three complimentary therapeutic sessions with a counselor live or virtually, as well as partnered with Sanvello (UHC app) and ComPsych (through our EAP Program) designed to address mental health concerns 24/7. These offerings provide everything from "daily happiness check-ins" to virtual therapy sessions and group therapy sessions.
Q: What statistic best captures the success of your program’s effectiveness in the past 12 months?
A: There is not one statistic that can effectively determine a program's success. Our Program’s success is multi layered including several outcome measures, including but not limited to: engagement, claims reduction, identifying gaps in care, and, most importantly the anecdotal and qualitative outcome measures that include employee feedback. While statistics can measure certain elements of a program's overall success, evidence based success comes from knowing that our employees appreciate and voice their experience to executive leadership. Engagement to date has been over 80% since the program's inception in 2014, which is much higher than the industry standard. Our approach to “total wellbeing” has proven to engage employees and their spouses in our wellness program and improved the quality of life for those who participate for nearly 10 years.
Q: Provide a testimony from one of your employees.
A: “The BankUnited Employee Wellness Program and The Vault have served as a critical component of my exercise and wellness program since its inception. The convenience of having a state-of-the-art fitness center just steps away provides greater flexibility in the times I can exercise and eliminates many excuses with “going to the gym”. I have also found that the group classes offer a variety of options that were missing from my normal routine. It is a true benefit for those at or near the BUCC campus. Additionally, the wellness programming has addressed a number of very important issues that impact our employees daily. I am proud to participate and encourage my teams to engage.” – Juana Sanchez, Bank Operations
“The BankUnited Employee Wellness program began in 2014 when we identified the need to address employee lifestyle behaviors from a medical claims perspective. We secured an expert in the field of public health and education to develop, implement and manage a companywide program that has become very successful. The interest and engagement have been impressive year over year, and we included medically covered spouses with even greater participation. The global pandemic has created opportunities for our wellness program manager to think creatively about delivering health education programs, live-streaming fitness classes, healthy eating, and cooking demonstrations while maintaining the same high level of engagement. The Program has demonstrated value to employees, and we continue to support the growth and development of new programs and introducing new topics to our employees.”
