1st City of Lebanon Ohio– 155 Employees

The City of Lebanon – Ohio is a full-service municipality providing police, fire, parks and recreation, public works, and utility services to the community. The City of Lebanon has a population of 21,000 and is the county seat for Warren County, which is the 3rd fastest growing county in Ohio. They have 155 full-time employees and approximately 30 part time employees.

Robin, an employee of the city for over 14 years, told us about her experience with the wellness program. She recapped her daughter's battle with mental health and opened the door to how the city supported her fully during this time. Robin stated “I took what felt like a huge risk and shared my very personal family struggle; first with my supervisor, then close coworkers, and eventually the City Manager. To great relief, my revelation was met with compassion and understanding. I'll never forget being told ‘family comes first, let us know if there is anything we can do.’ Over the following months, my coworkers stepped in and covered when I had to leave work unexpectedly, left encouraging notes, gave me reassuring smiles, and most of all listened. While the City has always encouraged physical health and provided EAP, they started a new initiative during this time called ‘Start the Conversation’, an interactive workshop designed to get employees talking about mental health / illness and reducing the stigma. It was very encouraging to me as my family continued to struggle.” -Robin Simms, Account Clerk

2nd McGohan Brabender- 200 Employees

Throughout their  50 years in business, McGohan Brabender has been built by people, for people, and is now employee owned! One of their core values harps on strengthening their communities through healthy families. At MB, they provide expert service in benefit plan design, communication, member advocacy, wellness, compliance, and actuarial services. "Empowering Healthier Living" is their proven approach to risk mitigation, which translates to healthier people and lower costs.

“When I started at MB in 2017, I was going through a divorce and a 30+lb weight gain. I, like many others, was comforting myself with food. As a previous athlete, I thought I could eat whatever I like and burn it off in the gym. Reaching the age of fifty, I discovered that it was not that easy anymore! When I was enrolling in MB’s health insurance, I learned that the company takes great interest in their employees and their health. MB provided me with the opportunity to utilize the Naturally Slim program available to all employees. This taught me more about my body and how to see eating as fuel and not comfort. Also, at this time, our health insurance carrier provided me with a step tracker that challenged me to certain metrics daily. I, along with a coworker, took this to heart and held each other accountable daily. It became something we ‘did,’ and everyone knew us as the walkers! I am proud to say that with MB’s help, I have lost 40lbs and was able to keep it off for several years.” - Laura Radvan, Account Manager

When I started getting the health score and detailed health reports from doing the biometric screening and health risk assessment, I learned I wasn’t as healthy as I thought I was. This prompted me to get on a regular schedule with my primary care doctor to review my annual screening information, which resulted in my being put on a routine preventive medication I wasn’t even aware I needed. “In the fall of 2013, I visited our Hitachi Astemo Associates’ Wellness Center for a routine refill on my blood pressure medication. It was during this visit that Lisa Dance, Nurse Practitioner, was listening to my heart and told me that she heard a heart murmur. Lisa ordered an EKG on the spot, which showed no damage to my heart. She then referred me to the Ohio Heart Association for a follow up visit, where it was determined that my aortic valve had a leak in it. In January of 2014, my aortic valve was replaced with a mechanical valve. Once the medical team began surgery, they found an aneurysm on my aorta, which they also repaired. If the Nurse Practitioner, Lisa, had not caught my heart problem, I wouldn’t be here writing my testimony. Thank you, Lisa, I owe you my life! Today, the Hitachi Wellness Center continues to give me the best care I could ever ask for, with regular visits to monitor my PT / INR, as I will be on Warfarin for the rest of my life.” - Jessie Meeks, Hitachi Astemo Americas Employee

"In a year with so much bad - this program was a reminder to find the good in small things. I have been able to still provide myself with some "soul food" through my wellness journey in all the pillars. Reminding myself that you don't always have to work on everything all at once has given me great peace of mind. I've learned that by focusing on just one piece of my wellness in a given month and succeeding in those goals, rather than taking on too much and risking failure. Throughout this year I've been able to create (and stick to) a payoff plan for my debt free date, focus on decluttering my life, and engage in my community - even if not always in person!” -Anonymous

I have become familiar with my ‘numbers’ through the annual blood work requirement. Prior to being in the wellness program, my doctor would order tests but I wouldn’t see or discuss the results unless there was a problem. With the wellness program, these numbers are visible to me so I can discuss them with my doctor and compare year after year. Through the wellness program, I am able to receive reimbursement for my fitness expenses to Orangetheory Fitness®. This membership has helped me reduce body fat and extra pounds. And a few years ago, I participated in a wellness step challenge that had me logging more miles than I ever thought possible.
