25 to 499 Employees

1st Commonwealth Credit Union
Frankfort, Kentucky
383 Employees

Commonwealth Credit Union, founded on April 2, 1951, began with 122 shareholders, $2,700 in assets, and one volunteer. By 1976, the credit union employed six people and served nearly 6,000 members. Since then, its assets have expanded from $2.8 million to more than $2.5 billion. Today, Commonwealth Credit Union operates 17 branches across Central Kentucky and the Louisville Metro Area.

Commonwealth Credit Union offers free healthy snacks in all branch and department break rooms as part of a Wellness Committee initiative to promote better nutrition and show appreciation for employees. A new addition to this program is the Ripple Ambassador, a team member who delivers snacks and positivity, helping to “start the ripple that changes our communities.”

The credit union is fully committed to addressing the Five Pillars of Wellbeing, using Gallup’s Wellbeing at Work as a framework for leadership training. The Wellness Committee supports this commitment through weekly communications on physical and mental health topics and monthly fitness challenges that are inclusive for all employees. The organization has also introduced wellbeing-focused podcasts.

Each year, Commonwealth Credit Union updates its benefits package based on team feedback and industry trends. Recent enhancements include flexible scheduling options, such as a four-day workweek, and expanded remote work eligibility to support work-life balance. Culture Champions within each department lead monthly team-building activities and provide additional snacks to boost morale.

1st Louisville Metro Government
Louisville, Kentucky
5,381 Employees

Louisville Metro Government (LMG) serves the City of Louisville, Kentucky, the largest city in the state, located along the Ohio River on the Kentucky–Indiana border. LMG is the city’s 13th largest employer. Its mission is to act as a catalyst for creating a world-class city that offers safe and vibrant neighborhoods, quality jobs, a strong education and innovation system, and an overall high quality of life for all residents.

Louisville Metro Government (LMG) demonstrates a strong commitment to employee wellness through comprehensive programs addressing physical, mental, and social well-being. Its Campaign to End Gender-Based Violence provides up to seven days of paid leave per year for Metro Government employees affected by domestic violence, gun violence, or other crimes, either for themselves or a household member. This confidential benefit, supported by the Mayor and LMG leadership, has been utilized by 30 employees and can be used for therapy, medical care, or legal support.

In 2024, LMG enhanced healthcare delivery at its onsite wellness center by implementing the Epic electronic medical record system, which allows for coordinated care and reduces treatment gaps. Patients complete a social determinants of health questionnaire before visits, and through MyChart, they can access records, view lab results, and communicate with providers to support shared decision-making. Visits cost only $5, with many generic medications included, resulting in significant pharmacy savings—7,042 medications were dispensed on-site in 2024, cutting costs by 46%. Staff also monitor external prescription costs to ensure affordability.

Mental health support is provided through the LifeSolutions program, offering five free counseling sessions per year to employees and their families. The program was rebranded from “Employee Assistance Program” to reduce stigma and increase engagement. High-risk departments receive weekly on-site counseling. Social and community wellness is promoted through events like “Walk with the Dietitians,” a guided downtown walk that combines physical activity and networking; in October 2024, over 50 employees participated, and the event now continues annually with a $50 participation incentive.
