Permanente Dental Associates, P.C. is a Northwest-based, dentist-owned multidisciplinary group practice that partners with Kaiser Permanente Health Plan of the Northwest to deliver integrated oral health care to over 290,000 Kaiser Permanente Dental members, 90% of whom are also medical members. By utilizing shared electronic health records between physicians and dentists, the practice creates opportunities to incorporate primary care within the dental setting. 

In 2023, the organization launched an ongoing New Hire Wellness Challenge to help new employees establish strong foundations for their wellness journey, achieving a 73% participation rate since its inception. The challenge includes five key steps: registering in the patient portal, completing a health risk assessment, addressing any current or past due care gaps, enrolling in a recommended healthy lifestyle program, and transferring outside prescriptions to Kaiser Permanente’s internal mail-order pharmacy.

Participants who complete all steps receive a one-time incentive package that includes items such as a fitness tracker to support continued engagement in wellness.

A major focus of the program is active use of the patient portal, which provides secure access to medical records, test results, direct messaging with care providers, appointment scheduling, and health reminders. Currently, over 96% of the group is registered and actively using the portal, 10% above the industry average. This tool fosters patient-provider collaboration, builds trust, and supports better health outcomes.

The portal also offers convenient care options such as phone and video consultations, reducing barriers to access and promoting health equity for individuals with work or childcare commitments.
